USA Today – Zagat: Top Sandwiches For Travelers

USA Today and Zagat have assembled the United States’ best sandwiches for business travelers on the go – and Langer’s hot pastrami sandwiches on crispy-crust warm rye bread is one of their selections!

Farther down the West Coast in Los Angeles, Zagat steers sandwich seekers to Langer’s Deli on South Alvarado Street. There, Zagat says, they’ll find “world-class pastrami stacked on crusty yet chewy, double-baked rye.”

Condolences to the Family of Nora Ephron

All of us at Langer’s Delicatessen-Restaurant would like to extend our condolences to the family of Nora Ephron, who passed away yesterday at 71 in Manhattan.

A true friend of Langer’s Deli, Nora wrote eloquently about our pastrami in The New Yorker in 2002, which you can read excerpted here.

She will be missed.

NBC4: Happy 65th Langer’s Deli!

Our friends at NBC4 gave us some great help in promoting our 65th Anniversary Event, coming this Friday and Saturday, June 15-16, 2012, at 7th and Alvarado.

Today, we’re talking about the beloved restaurant’s 65th birthday. And, in true beloved restaurant-style, Langer’s will be celebrating with a giveaway for its customers. Oh yeah, it is what you think it is: The deli will give away free #19 sandwiches on Friday, June 15 and Saturday, June 16.

LAWeekly: Langer’s Serving Free Pastrami for 65th Anniversary

Garrett Snyder of the LA Weekly has a terrific piece up discussing our 65th Anniversary Event, coming up this Friday and Saturday, June 15-16, 2012, at 7th and Alvarado.

It’s pretty much a forgone conclusion that the ultra-thick pastrami at Langer’s Delicatessen is the best in the city, and depending on whom you ask, one of the best in the country to boot. Sides of beef brisket are smoked, cured, steamed for hours, then sliced by hand — a step which owner Norm Langer insists is crucial — yielding a meat peppery and smoky enough to bring a man to tears.

So what could be better than digging into the famous #19 sandwich, made with hot pastrami, cole slaw, Russian dressing, and Swiss cheese on warm, double-baked rye bread? How about enjoying it for free.

To celebrate 65 years of total deli domination (Langer’s first opened in 1947) and four millions pounds of pastrami served, the Westlake institution will be serving free #19 sandwiches next Friday and Saturday. Langer’s is extending its hours beyond 4 p.m. just for the event too; from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. on June 15 and 6:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. on June 16, each customer is eligible to receive one free sandwich. You must be seated at table, chair, or booth and must be waited on by a Langer’s server (no take-out or bum-rushing) during the event hours to take advantage of the deal.

KPCC: Why does LA love Langer’s Deli?

Jerry Gorin, host of Off-Ramp at 89.3 KPCC, visited us recently to get a jump on our 65th Anniversary Event, and ask patrons what they love about Langer’s Deli. The result is fantastic!:

“I’ve been coming here for about 2 years. We work in downtown and try to come down twice a week. We only come for the pastrami.”

“I’ve been coming here for 25 years. I think it’s a classic!”

“I live in London, and I specifically asked on this visit to have a reuben sandwich, so where’s the best place? And I was told this is the best pastrami.”

“I’ve been coming to Langer’s about twice a week for about 10 years. It’s the culture of Los Angeles!”

“Probably the best pastrami sandwich I’ve ever had.”

KCET: Langer’s Deli’s 65th Anniversary
