NBC4LA.com – Best Corned Beef for St. Paddy’s Day

NBC4LA.com has proclaimed the best places in Los Angeles to get corned beef for St. Patrick’s Day (coming this Sunday, March 17th – we’ll be closed, so come visit us on Saturday the 16th!), and Langer’s Delicatessen-Restaurant was named to the exclusive list of only three recommendations! The other restaurants include Tom Bergin’s and Magee’s Kitchen.

Not only does the MacArthur Park-adjacent eatery have corned beef, but it puts that corned beef into some of its top sandwiches (lest you like your meat to arrive with a little bread). The Fresser’s Special Sandwich rocks the savory stuff, in addition to other savory stuff, too (yep, pastrami is in there). But something to note: Langer’s is not open on Sunday, so this will have to be your St. Patrick’s Eve meal.

Kevork’s images are terrific and follow on the coverage provided by Tiffany Hsu of the Los Angeles Times last week, profiling the challenges faced by today’s Jewish deli restauranteurs.

Los Angeles Times: Jewish Delis in a Pickle

Tiffany Hsu, business writer for the Los Angeles Times, today published a well-written piece on the state of the Jewish deli, around the country and with an emphasis on here in Los Angeles.

Inspired by the recent closing of Junior’s Deli in Westwood, the article features great background on the rising costs and demographic changes impacting the traditional Jewish deli. The article also features a terrific picture of our server Sheila and includes quotes from owner Norm Langer:

Fish prices have “gone crazy,” said Langer, whose father launched the business 65 years ago. The deli hasn’t sold barbecued cod in five years, when the seafood went from being a third cheaper than lox to a third more expensive and supply became unpredictable.

Beef prices, inflated by the severe summer drought and mass exports to Japan, aren’t helping. Neither are skyrocketing premiums for medical benefits for the eatery’s unionized workers, Langer said.

And with diners still wary after the downturn, even a pastrami sandwich as revered as his struggles when it costs more than $20 a person after a beverage, a side dish, tax and tip, Langer said.

“At Quiznos, you can buy a sandwich for lunch for $5,” he said. “That’s a third of the cost at a first-class deli. The deli has a better-quality product, but you’re going to be filled up with either option.”

89.3 KPCC Offramp: Langer’s Deli and Artist Marinus Welman

The famed paintings that hang in Langer’s Delicatessen-Restaurant, created by artist Marinus Welman in 1968, were the subject of a fascinating segment on Southern California Public Radio’s premiere weekend magazine program, Offramp:

Langer’s Delicatessen has been around for over 65 years now. The MacArthur Park-adjacent institution’s serves matzo ball soup, lox on bagel and the famous Number 19 sandwich. Past the hordes of pastrami-loving diners that line the booths you’ll find three paintings: they show a Langer’s Deli 45 years into the past.

Off-Ramp Kevin Ferguson found out the paintings are the work of a Dutch born painter named Marinus Welman who is still painting today. He went to Langers to investigate. Norm Langer, the deli’s owner says despite please to sell them, the paintings are a treasured part of his “public collection.”

Huell Howser Archive at Chapman University

Chapman University in Orange invited us to visit the grand opening of the Huell Howser Archive on campus, including a display of many of the items from his extensive and eclectic collection. We took some photographs so that you can enjoy them as much as we did during our visit. It’s a wonderful reminiscence of this great man and his body of work, ranging from his home in Tennessee and his first broadcast experience at WSM in Nashville, to his many found-art objects from his travels and of course, his complete archive of video programs from the entirety of his career.

We are grateful to have been a part of Huell’s “Visiting…” series in 2010, and we are honored to have been invited to the grand opening celebration of his Archive at Chapman.

The Club Sandwich Club: Langer’s Club Sandwich

The Club Sandwich Club and its contributor Tom Jakubowicz recently paid a visit to Langer’s Delicatessen-Restaurant on the eve of a jet return to Europe, because they had been told that the best club sandwich in Los Angeles was to be found at Langer’s Deli. The verdict?

…you will only like Langer’s Club House Sandwich, if you are a club sandwich traditionalist. This means, that a club sandwich for you includes mayo, bacon, lettuce and tomatoes ONLY. It is very true to the place, Langer’s is a delicatessen restaurant with a lot of heritage and if you are expecting any fancy twists, or boiled eggs, or anything, you should look elsewhere (or add them to your order).

Bottom line: “22 out of 25 (Deli-cious!)”
