Well…sort of! It actually features President Bill Clinton, who made a Los Angeles public appearance at Langer’s Deli on April 20, 2013, to endorse Wendy Greuel for mayor. But the new commercial features Langer’s employees, including Jose Luis, Rigo, Jaime and Jaime Ayon (back row) and Eveline, Greg and Shina (front row) listening intently as President Clinton speaks.

Lefsetz Letter: Langer’s #19 for Birthday Lunch

Famed entertainment and music industry analyst and commentator Bob Lefsetz spent his birthday celebrating the happiest way he knows – with a Langer’s #19 sandwich!

You want a #19.

I have birthday traditions. You know how institutions of higher learning have all those rules you’ve got to follow for no good reason other than everybody before you did the same damn thing? Well, I’m my own stuff-shirted traditionalist, it all hearkens back to…

1977.

Yup, that’s when I went to Langer’s and on to C.C. Brown’s and “Annie Hall” on my birthday.

That’s the tradition, hot pastrami, hot fudge sundae and a movie…or two or three.

Langer’s?

What kind of country do we live in where the best pastrami sandwich is not in New York but Los Angeles?

Yes, all the critics agree. It’s the hand-cut meat. The rye bread.

And the cole slaw, Swiss cheese and Russian dressing.

Huh? How can you taste all those flavors, that’s a mishmash akin to an everything bagel!

Only it’s not.

I worked my way up to the #19, Langer’s legendary sandwich.

At first I only got the pastrami, then the swiss cheese, then I remembered the sandwiches in the mountains, i.e. the Catskills, with cole slaw, and I went for the whole shebang and that’s what I have every April 22nd, the #19. And it couldn’t have been better yesterday.

And just because I was overdoing it, I had the crinkly fries too. Or should I say KRINKLY fries? And of course a Dr. Brown’s Black Cherry. Come on, you can’t eat at the deli without it.

And the Russian dressing is oozing out of the sandwich, but the crunch of the bread is so satisfying, it’s a modern mouth orgasm and a return to my youth all at once.

Thank you, Bob, for including us in your birthday celebrations, and please say hello next time you are in so that we may thank you personally for this wonderful piece – The Langer Family

Thanks to the writers of TNT’s Southland, a fine police drama that recently included a scene where one officer attempts to cheer another up with the presentation of a Langer’s #19 hot pastrami sandwich – check out the clip, and thank you, Southland writers – please introduce yourself on your next visit so that we may thank you in person!

Norm Langer on ESPNLA 710’s Weekend Warrior Show with Dr. Robert Klapper

Norm Langer made a guest appearance Saturday on ESPNLA 710’s Weekend Warrior sports medicine and health program hosted by Dr. Robert Klapper.

As it turns out, Robert did Norm’s knee replacements (both of ’em!) about 5 years ago, and Norm has been going strong ever since. He took this opportunity to recount how great his mobility now is, thanks to Robert’s skilled surgical technique and follow-up, live on the air.

President Bill Clinton Visits Langer’s Deli

President Bill Clinton visited Langer’s Delicatessen-Restaurant on Saturday, April 20, 2013, to endorse Los Angeles Mayoral Candidate Wendy Greuel. The former President spent about 90 minutes at Langer’s, telling the audience he’d been wanting to visit us “for years” and that the deli was “as old as I am” (66 years of age).

President Clinton spoke at length about Wendy’s qualifications for LA mayor, citing her time working in the Clinton Administration’s Housing and Urban Development department on many issues, including rebuilding the Southland after the 1994 Northridge earthquake. He took questions from the crowd and spent about 30 minutes visiting with attendees and posing for photographs.

It was a thrill and an honor to host the former President at Langer’s, and yes, we sent him on his way with a delicious #19 hot pastrami sandwich in his Secret Service Chevrolet Suburban.

Our thanks to all who helped make this happen. – The Langer Family

Langer’s on CBS’ Vegas

Langer’s Delicatessen-Restaurant gets an unbelievable mention on CBS Television’s “Vegas” starring Dennis Quaid and Michael Chiklis. A 300-mile request for pastrami sandwiches to be delivered from 1960s-era Langer’s to Las Vegas captured us all by surprise. Thank you, Vegas writers, and please introduce yourselves when you visit us next so that we may thank you personally. – The Langer Family

Los Angeles Magazine: Oh My Lunch: Langer’s #19 Edition

Los Angeles Magazine’s Photo intern (and food enthusiast) Katie Buntsma paid her first visit to Langer’s Deli recently and penned the latest edition of LA Magazine’s “Oh My Lunch” on the Langer’s #19:

I don’t usually like sandwiches (heck, I’ve been ordering the same Subway sandwich since I was three), but this towering tribute to Jewish deli tradition has made me rethink everything. The pastrami is warm, sliced to the perfect thickness. The crunchy coleslaw and Russian dressing perk up your taste buds, and the rustic rye bread add another layer of texture. I could eat this any day of the week.
